Artscape 2011 Official Video!

We love working with the folks at the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts. They are either help support or are responsible for a great number of events in Baltimore City, including the Baltimore Book Festival and the Baltimore Grand Prix. They host the monument lighting, maintain Cloisters Castle, the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower, and Top of the World. But by far, their biggest endeavor is Artscape, a three-day festival of art, music, theater, opera, film, street performance, dance, and of course, funnel cakes.

Both this year and in 2011, Zinnia Films has been honored to support BOPA in their efforts to produce Artscape by being the official video crew for the festival. Last year, our video work served two purposes: both to produce a video as a sizzle piece for the web, and as a video that bundled into their grant application with the NEA, which they were awarded. This year, we only produced a celebration piece, which is below.

It’s always great to work with Sachs Photography and Plan It Perfect. But this July day at the Baltimore Museum of Industry was particularly sweet. It wasn’t too hot, and the sky was marvelous.

Day in Life 2011

We love participating in the Love Life Images Day in the Life. Photographers and clients alike document their day and send them to Love Life Images once a year in mid-September. Since we shoot video, we typically make a short video of the day. It’s a hustle to edit it overnight to meet the mid-day deadline the next day, but always a lot of fun. Here’s the one I submitted this year

Meredith & Owen

Here’s a recent (early June) event we shot with Katie Martin of Elegance and Simplicity. What a beautiful afternoon. Meredith and Owen have some excellent dance moves, and really unique musical tastes, so we incorporated some of live audio–including the waltz Owen wrote for Meredith for their first dance–in this full day video.

“To What Strange Place” Teaser Trailer

We had an opportunity to work with Tompkins Square Records, as well as Ian Nagoski to produce a short mini doc and a one-minute teaser about the new 3-CD collection, “To What Strange Place: Music of the Ottoman-American Diaspora 1916-1929.” The shoot, directed by Dimmerswitch’s Matt Bowden (a seemingly perpetual collaborator with Zinnia), features some of the beautiful music from the collection that Nagoski sought and remastered. The shoot took a skeleton crew to the sleepy city of Frostburg to see Nagoski’s operation, as well as to Manhattan and Brooklyn for a listening party and for b-roll.

The music runs the gamut of dance numbers to despondent pieces longing for a world that immigrants fled, evading massacre. Check out the one minute trailer. We’re excited to see how the mini-doc shapes up in Bowden’s cutting room.

Our kickoff to the 2011 wedding season is well underway. This is a full day from a recent wedding we shot at the Grand Lodge in Cockeysville, MD. We had the opportunity to spend the day with a lot of great colleagues and vendors, including Joe and Anne Sachs of Sachs Photography, Rachel Shaw from Plan It Perfect, Linwoods Catering, and JJ Cummings Floral.

Along with George Nierenberg’s 1982 documentary, Say Amen, Somebody, one of the biggest influences on the production of By and By has been the photography of Michael P. Smith.

By and By producer/director Joe Compton was friends with Mike, and this video from the Historic New Orleans Collection gives some insight into why By and By is very much a tribute to Smith’s preservationist work.
